Quilting with your Walking Foot - Beyond Stitching in the Ditch

Using a Walking Foot – Beyond Stitching in the Ditch

Have you been wanting to try quilting yourself?  Or have you used your walking foot but only to stitch in the ditch?  Join Teresa as she starts with the basics of preparing your quilt sandwich to doing creative designs all with your machine and walking foot. We will be using Explore Walking Foot Quilting by Leah Day as a reference book.

SKILL LEVEL:  Beginner.  A basic knowledge of quilting/sewing is needed.

Expectation – By the end of the class you will be able to use your domestic machine and walking foot to do your own quilting.

Class Approach – During class, we will learn how to prepare your quilt for quilting and how to do different designs using the walking foot, including using decorative stitches. This class will help build your confidence in quilting with a walking foot.

During the class, we will take a closer look at the walking foot, how to prepare the quilt project for quilting, marking your quilts as well as what are the best markers to use and practicing on sample quilt sandwiches.  We will also discuss what needles and thread weights are best to use for successful outcomes.  There will be discussion on choosing what design to use on your projects.

Basic Sewing Supplies and Preparation Instructions Prior to Class
• Sewing machine in good working order with a new needle (size 90/14)

• Walking foot with seam guide bars

• (12) – 12” x 12” of light or dark plain fabric squares

• (6) – 12” x 12” batting squares

• Thread to contrast with your fabric, the thread should be at least a 40 – 50 weight

• 2-1/2” x 12-1/2” or 3-1/2” x 12-1/2” ruler

• Seam gauge

• Roll of narrow (1”) blue painter’s tape

• Notebook and pencil

Preparation prior to class:

Bring your fabric precut.

You will need 6 - 12" square quilt sandwiches of Lite or Dark - plain fabric so you can see your stitches

For each quilt sandwich you will need 2 – 12” squares of the lite or dark fabric and 1- 12” square of batting.

A cotton blend like Hobbs 80/20 batting is preferred.  You may pin baste your sandwiches or use a temporary adhesive spray such as 505.

If you chose to use the adhesive spray, here are the directions.

Spray the wrong side of each of your 12” square fabrics.  Then place the square you are using for the back of the sandwich wrong side up, layer a piece of batting on it, then put the fabric square you are using for the top of the sandwich right side up.  Then press the back of the sandwich starting from the center to the edges with the iron.  Next press the top side starting in the center working to the edges.  The iron will heat set your sandwiches so you should have good results.
