Floor Canvas Quilting Rugs
Whether you’re a seasoned quilting veteran, or a sewing newbie, a floor canvas is a terrific smaller-scale project to hone your basic sewing skills when working with heavier canvas fabrics. An “illustrate with thread” technique will also be introduced to embellish and add visual dimension to the appliqué pieces. There will be plenty of canvas related tips and tricks along the way. The ease and flexibility of a floor canvas will have you creating these “mini quilts for the floor” for the kitchen, bath, hallway, entry, mud room and more. This rug is perfect for your home and gift giving! Maximum finished dimension is approximately 33 x 51, but you are in control if you want a smaller version.
This class listing is ONLY for the instructional help that will be provided to get you going. The kit for this project will be extra and will include the canvas for your rug, all fabrics that you need to build your rug are included which have been ALREADY CUT AND HEAT AND BOND APPLIED. What a better way to get a jump start on this project! We are happy to be able to provide this for this class at the Sewing Studio.
In class, I will talk you through the process of how to position your pieces, the raw edge applique process, and how to quilt your rug. If you do not complete your project and still need help, we have the Open Sew Day where I can be present to help you finish
The kits will be held for the class participants and will be available for pickup day of class. The canvas for these rugs is a dream to work with. It is definitely not what you think of when you think canvas. The kit is all the fabric that is needed, and bonded applique pieces. The other supplies you need for this project is a crib size batting (I use Hobbs 80/20) and some thread for the raw edge applique. This time I used black Isacord but we can talk through your options.
I hope you will join me and have a great time sewing this project! You will be getting 2 tables for this project. One for the machine and one to lay out your rug to get your layout and to create your quilt sandwich.
If the class is showing full, please put your name on the wait list. This will give the store the information we need to offer more classes on this technique moving in 2025.
Bring with you:
Your machine
Foot pedal
80/12 needles - depending on machine a 90/14 needle will work as well.
rulers -- 24" to help with quilting and if you have a 12" that works too
Chalk marker or water removable marker of your choice
Pins -- you will need to hold your canvas and batting as a quilt sandwich to get going. I used regular straight longer pins but if you have safety quilting pins they would be a good option as well. I did not try the spray, but that may be a good option.
For feet for you machine, for Bernina users, the 34D or 1D is a great choice, an open toe foot for your applique (20) is a good option, for the quilting, if you do not have dual feed, bring a walking foot if you have one. Not needed, but helps. If you have a walking foot, then you can test whether you like using dual feed or the walking foot. For non-Bernina users, a multipurpose foot that you like for straight sewing that gives you some visibility of the project especially for the applique part.
Bring Slide on table
When you arrive, please pull to the front of the store, drop off your machine and then park on the east side of the building.
See everyone soon!
