Cutwork Class -- Christmas Tree Placemat
Do you know there is a cutwork tool that works with your Bernina Machine? Do you have a cutwork tool but never tried it? Cheryl has been at it again, this time she has created the cutest Christmas tree and matching embroidery that you can do with your Cutwork Tool and Software to create a Christmas Placemat.
This class will use the Bernina cutwork tool to create two different designs that are then used to make one placemat. We will stitch/cut out two sets of both designs so you can complete two placemats at home. The left side of the placemat has a Reverse Applique Christmas Tree. The right side of the placemat has a Christmas Gift pocket that can be used to hold silverware when you set your table!

In this class
Embroidery and cutwork are completed first in the hoop.
o The Christmas Tree requires a large oval hoop (or larger – the Midi hoop will work as well since it is just slightly larger)
o The Gift piece can be done in a medium hoop. This is the small square hoop that came with your Bernina.
- You will receive instructions for completing your placemat, following the process used for the class sample. You can finish using a different approach if you prefer.
Supplies Needed for Class:
- Sewing machine
- Embroidery module, large oval hoop, and medium hoop
- Cutwork tool and foot 44C if you have one - If you don’t have a cutwork tool, we will have one that can be shared.
- Foot 26 for embroidery
- Thread colors of your choice. The colors used in the class sample are:
o Gift:
- Poinsettia Red 1902 – Candy cane pattern on the gift and satin stitch outline
- Antique 0721 – Bow on top of the present
- Black 0020 – Outline and detail for the box
o Christmas Tree:
- Moss Green 5934 – outline stitch and stem stitch around the tree
- Redwood 0933 – tree base
- Antique 0721 – Garland on the tree
- California Blue 4103 – lights on the tree
- Yellow 0310 – Star and lights on the tree
- Poinsettia Red 1902 – lights on the tree
- Erin Green 5912 - lights on the tree
- Polymesh stabilizer for two hoopings in each hoop
- Medium weight cut away stabilizer – will need 4 pieces – 1 for each hooping:
o 2 pieces approximately 8 x 10 for Christmas tree
o 2 pieces approximately 6 x 8 for Gift
- Paper tape
- Size 80 embroidery needle
- Cutting tools of your choice – scissors, rotary cutter, ruler, etc.
- A USB stick to put design on for your sewing machine
- Fabric Required: (This list refers to the colors as used in the class sample. You can use other colors if you’d like.)
o White fabric – 2 pieces cut 9 x 14.
o Red Fabric – 2 pieces cut 12 x 14
o Green fabric for the Tree – 2 pieces cut 9 x 7
o White fabric for the present – 2 pieces cut 4.5 x 5.5
o Fabric for pocket behind the gift (class sample used the same red as the top of the placemat) – 2 pieces cut 5 x 5
o SF101 - cut for each piece listed above, except the placemat back. Apply to the back of each piece
o Red Fabric same as top piece - Backing of placemat – 22 x 16 (the class sample uses a self binding method) – we will not need this in class. You will finish at home.
o Batting – 21 x 15 – we will not need this in class. You will need at home to finish.
